Super Formula driver Liam Lawson wants to move into Formula One, but will anyone pick him? Currently, Lawson is the reserve driver for the Formula One team AlphaTauri and is presently second in the Super Formula Driver’s Championship. With the breaking news of Daniel Riccardo taking the AlphaTauri seat, Lawson was moved to be primarily the Red Bull racing reserve driver.

When the Nyck De Vries seat opened up, the two main contenders were two drivers from down under, the Aussie Daniel Riccardo and the Kiwi himself Liam Lawson. In the end, Daniel Riccardo who was the former Formula One driver and current Red Bull Formula One reserve driver took the seat.

The Red Bull Junior, Lawson is seen by many as a possible up-and-coming driver and placed if placed in Formula One could excel. Even though this may be the case, is there a spot for him in the foreseeable future on the grid? The answer is possibly, but most likely only with a Red Bull Racing affiliated team such as Red Bull itself or more realistically AlphaTauri.

As of right now, Daniel Riccardo is on loan to AlphaTauri from Red Bull till the end of the year unless a contract extension is announced and Yuki Tsunoda’s contract is also due to expire at the end of this season. This means unless any contract extensions or new contracts are signed, the seats are open.

Reportedly, Yuki is the favorite for the seat and there’s a high probability Daniel will stay for another year, especially with his goal of returning to the coveted Red Bull Seat. With that being said, Liam is definitely in the running for a seat, and if he is not chosen for the 2024 season he may stay as a reserve driver. This will give him a better chance for the 2025 season particularly if he wins this season in Super Formula.
