Yankees tied for Last Place after dropping Game 1 against Rockies

Carlos Rodón’s second start with the New York Yankees was far from expected. The left hander would go 5 innings giving up 4 runs on four hits and two walks. It would be in the bottom of the 2nd inning where Rodón would give up 3 runs.
Rodón was able to get catcher Elias Diaz to fly out to right field on the first pitch of the inning. He would then walk first baseman C.J. Cron on 5 pitches. Left fielder Randal Grichuk would hit a single to right putting Cron on second, before shortstop Ezequiel Tovar would shoot a line drive just missing hitting Rodón in the head, into center field for a single scoring Cron. Rodón would get second baseman Alan Trejo to fly out to left. While centerfielder Brenton Doyle was up to bat, Rodón would throw a slider in the dirt getting by catcher Kyle Higashioka letting both Grichuk and Tovar advance a base. Doyle would then hit a double over the head of Isiah Kiner-Falefa in left field, scoring both runners.

The Yankees new Hitting Coach Sean Casey saw his first game and had his first glimpse of the offense he would be working with as second baseman Gleyber Torres would start the game with a single followed by right fielder Giancarlo Stanton mashing a ball 455 feet for a quick 2-0 lead. No other runs would come around to score for the Yankees. There is indeed a lot of work that Casey will need to do. The bright side is the Yankees offense had 8 hits tonight, one more than the Rockies. What the Yankees also had more of were more opportunities with men on base. The Rockies only left 3 people on base while going 3-for-6 with runners in scoring position. The Yankees on the other hand left 6 runners on base while going 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
Tonight’s loss puts the Yankees’ record at 49-43 and moves them into last place with the Boston Red Sox as they won against the Chicago Cubs 8-3. The struggling Yankees need to find a balance between starting pitching and offense soon as they are playing the Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Angels, Kansas City Royals and New York Mets; all teams who are under .500 right now. If they cannot right the ship and start winning series, the future may be bleak for the Bronx Bombers.
