The first game of the second half for both the Washington Nationals and St. Louis Cardinals was thrown awry as a wicked thunderstorm rolled through the St. Louis area forcing the game to be suspended after two outs in the bottom of the third.

When play resumed as now the first game of a doubleheader, the Cardinals were up 1-0 thanks to Lars Nootbaar.

The score would be tied in the fourth thanks to an RBI single from Joey Meneses to score CJ Abrams. In the fifth the game would unravel for both teams, as in the top half, the Cardinals gave up three runs, one of which was a steal of home from Luis Garcia. Only one of the runs was earned as Wilson Contreras made two errors in the inning, with Nolan Arenado make a rare one of his own, ironically after making a great basket catch in foul territory

In the bottom half, Brendan Donavan tied it up with this three run bomb.

It was Donavan’s tenth on the season. The score remained tied until the eighth when Meneses doubled home Ildemaro Vargas. However, in the bottom half, Willson Contreras came up big for the Cardinals with a long ball of his own.

The score remained tied until the top of the tenth when former Cardinals Lane Thomas hit an RBI single off Jordan Hicks.

The Nationals would score another run to put the game out of reach for the Cardinals in a 7-5 victory. The victory put the Nationals at 37-54, 5th in their division. The loss once again kept the Cardinals in the bottom of the cellar for the Central League, 38-53. It has been said that the Cardinals are looking to sellers at the trade deadline for the first time at least for this generation of baseball fans. It is an unparalleled time in Cardinals baseball, and who knows what could come next.

The two teams will play again tonight for the second game of the doubleheader.
