Copa del Rey RECAP: Real Madrid go through, Barcelona and Atletico fall

The Copa del Rey round of 16 gave us some really good matches this past week. The games started on Saturday January 15th with Real Mallorca beating RCD Espanyol 2-1, Girona losing against Rayo Vallecano 1-2, and Sporting Gijón and Cádiz went to penalties after a 0-0 score on regular and extra time, where Cadiz won 4-2.

On Sunday we had 2 more matches were Valencia beat third division Atlético Baleares 1-0 and Real Betis played a great game against Sevilla and won 2-1.

On Wednesday, Real Sociedad received Atletico de Madrid, and they took the lead on the 33rd minute thanks to a goal from Adnan Januzaj. Real Sociedad dominated the game and started the second half dominating and scoring again in the 47th minute, Atletico were never able to respond to Real’s dominance.

Thursday brought to us the last 2 matches of this round of 16, the first one being Elche vs Real Madrid game that ended up going to extra time, where Elche scored first but first Isco and then Eden Hazard were able to score and turn the score around for Madrid. The other match faced Athletic Club and FC Barcelona, this really entertaining game ended up 2-2 after Pedri Gonzalez tied the game for Barcelona in the 93rd minute. This lead the game to extra time, where Iker Muniain sentenced the game by scoring a penalty in the 105th minute.

The quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey have already been drawn and they will be played in February 2nd starting with Rayo Vallecano vs Real Mallorca and Valencia vs Cádiz. The next day, the other 2 games that will be played are Real Sociedad vs Real Betis and Athletic Club vs Real Madrid.
