Tigres at the top of liga mx
This past weekend Tigres defeated Toluca at home in a commanding 3-0 win to reach 32 points. This match was headlined by Andre Pierre Gignac scoring his league-leading 11th goal of the season and Luis Quinones, who now leads the league in assists with six after his assist to Gignac. Although Quinones and Gignac headlined the match, there were other notable performances in Saturday's match, like those from Juan Pablo Vigon and Sebastian Cordova. Juan Pablo Vigon, Tigres’ midfielder, was able to score his fifth goal of the season in the match against Toluca, but more notably, he is starting to bring questions as to whether he should be given a chance on the Mexican National team. After many notable performances like the one on Saturday, many news outlets in Mexico have been calling for Gerardo “Tata” Martino, Mexico’s head coach, to call up the 30-year-old for Mexico’s friendly against Guatemala at the end of this month.
Another Mexican player who found the back of the net in the match against Toluca was Sebastian Cordova. The 24-year-old scored his first goal for the club since joining them at the beginning of the season. Cordova has had trouble finding a spot on Tigres’ talent-heavy lineup. In 11 matches played for Los Felinos, he has four starts and two assists. Many believe this could be the spark Sebastian Cordova needs to find his place in the starting 11. With 14 matchdays played and a record of 10-2-2 in the Liga Mx 2022 Clausura, Tigres remain at the top of the table. They are not alone as they are tied with Pachuca at 32 points, but lead them by goal difference. Led by Miguel Herrara, Los Felinos have taken the first step in reaching the title by being one of the first teams to automatically qualify for La Liguilla’s quarter-finals. Under Liga Mx’s new playoff rules, the top four teams automatically qualify for the quarter-finals while spots five through 12 play in the wild-card round.
Although they seem to be favorites to win the title, many are question Tigres when it comes to playing against playoff teams. Against the current top eight teams in Liga Mx, Tigres has a 2-2 record with two games still yet to be played. Their only two losses of the season came from the 2nd place team Pachuca, to which they lost 2-1. The other loss came from 3rd place Puebla when they lost 2-0 in their home opener. Their two wins against current top eight teams were a 2-0 win against city rivals Rayados in El Clasico Regio and a 2-1 away win against Pumas UNAM. The remaining games against current top eight teams will be played later this season when they take on Club America on April 23rd and the defending champions Atlas on April 30th.
