Sergio Aguero Announces Retirement Due To Heart Complications

One of the most prolific strikers to grace the pitch, Sergio Aguero has been leaving fans in suspense all over the world. At the age of 33, Aguero has now officially announced his retirement from professional football. This comes off the back of an October match, with he was substituted off at half time against Alaves after experiencing chest discomfort.  Since this match, Aguero has not stepped back on the pitch.  It was later identified that his chest discomfort experienced that day was due to an arrhythmia, an atypical heartbeat, that would require a three month process to treat and identify any other complications.

After extensively working with the medical staff at Barcelona, Aguero stated that, β€œI made the decision 10 days ago after doing everything possible to have some hope of playing on. I am very proud for my career. I always dreamed of a professional career since the first time I touched a ball at 5.”  Adding on, β€œIt is a very difficult moment. The decision I have taken for my health; the problem I had a month and a half ago.”

From his early times at Independiente in Argentina, to Manchester City in England and across the sea to Barcelona in Spain, Aguero has been scoring goals from left to right. Starting his professional career in Argentina as a young teenager Aguero burst onto the scene, catching the eyes of several European clubs before signing with Spanish powerhouse Atletico Madrid in 2006.  In his 5 year stint, he scored 102 goals for the club before being transferred to Manchester City.  He currently hold the title of Manchester City’s top goal scorer in club history, totaling 260 goals in 309 appearances.  Throughout his time in England, he won 5 league titles and 15 trophies with City.  He averaged a goal every 108 minutes while in the Premier League.

With his retirement causing many emotions across the world, his former club and international teammate, Lionel Messi, had kind words,” "With so much happiness to lift the Copa America such a short time ago and with all of your accomplishments in England, the truth is that it hurts a lot to see how you must leave what you love the most due to what has happened.” "I am sure you will continue to be happy because you are the type of person who radiates happiness and those of us who love you are going to be with you. Now you will start a new stage in your life and I am convinced that you are going to live it with a big smile and with all the same hopefulness that you put into everything.”
