Real Madrid rolling in 2022

The year has started well for Real Madrid as they defeated Barcelona for the 5th straight time last week in the Supercopa de España Semi-Final. With goals from Vinícius Jr, Karim Benzema, and a game-winner in extra time from Federico Valverde, Los Merengues secured a spot in Sunday’s final. The 3-2 victory was Real Madrid’s 100th El Clasico win in team history.

The results were the same on Sunday when Real Madrid faced Athletic Bilbao in the Supercopa de España Final. Luka Modric opened the scoring in the 38th minute with an amazing right-footed goal. The game went to the half with a 1-0 score. In the second half, Karim Benzema was able to convert from the penalty spot to put Los Merengues up 2-0. In the 87th minute, Athletic Bilbao conceded a penalty after Éder Militão was shown a straight red for a handball in the box. The penalty was saved by Real Madrid’s goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, who was able to keep the score 2-0 and secure Madrid’s 12th Supercopa title in team history. Luka Modric was awarded the final’s MVP.

They are 5 points clear of Sevilla, 16 points clear of city rival Atlético Madrid, and 17 points clear of rival Barcelona, who are still struggling to find a way to work with the new head coach, Xavi Hernández.
