Premier League Team of the Season (so far)

This season in the English Premier League has been another intense title race. Many shock teams have been doing well, along with some of the big six teams underperforming. As we are at the halfway point in the Premier League season, here is my team of the season so far.

Goalkeeper: Nick Pope

Newcastle has been one of the best teams defensively, and goalkeeper Nick Pope has been a pivotal part of it. The team has allowed one goal in the Premier League since October at the time of writing this, and the 30-year-old goalie has been a man in form.

Pope has accumulated 51 saves so far with 12 clean sheets. He has also not committed an error leading to a goal. Newcastle currently sits fourth in the league, and Pope has been a massive reason for their success.

Left-Back: Luke Shaw

The left-back position was a position that was hard to decide. While Luke Shaw struggled at the start of the season, recently, he has been the definition of consistency. Shaw has been a key part of Manchester United both defensively and offensively. The left-back has scored a goal and created an assist while being the focus as an overlapping full-back at Manchester United.

Along with chance creation, he has also been very sound defensively, with a tackle percentage of 46 percent and zero errors leading to a goal. Shaw is a full-back that reflects the new-age mentalities of what a full-back should be.

Right-Back: Kieran Trippier

Like Shaw, Kieran Trippier is another example of a modern full-back who is defensively sound and looking to overlap and create chances. This is precisely what he has done this season for Newcastle.

On the attack, he accumulated one goal and four assists while also having 14 big chances created. He loves to be on the ball and play crosses into the box for his team to score. Trippier has also been a beast on defense, with a tackle success rate of 71 percent and zero errors leading to a goal. He has been a crucial reason for the success of Newcastle and has by far been the best right-back in the league.

Center-Backs: Thiago Silva and Lisandro Martinez

Center-Backs: Thiago Silva and Lisandro Martinez

These two center-backs have by and far been the best this season. Saliba from Arsenal could also have gotten on this list, but for me, the best two have been Lisandro Martinez and Thiago Silva. Martinez, who is in his first season for Manchester United, has been the perfect partner for Raphael Varane.

While he is shorter than most center-backs in the league, he is one of the most aggressive defenders. He is the definition of putting his body on the line and is always in the right position to stop attacks from the opposing team.

Along with Martinez, Thiago Silva has also been dominant this season. He has been the anchor for this struggling Chelsea team. He is a phenomenal ball-playing center-back with zero errors leading to goals and a tackle success rate of 60 percent and four assists. While Chelsea has struggled, Silva has not.

 Center Defensive Midfielder: Casemiro

Simply put, Casemiro is the best defensive midfielder in the league. Coming to Manchester United after a stellar career at Real Madrid, Casemiro has been a force to be reckoned with this season.

He is everywhere on the pitch for this team, contributing as the last line of defense for the midfield, constantly cutting off passes and winning challenges. Casemiro is also a key part of their offense as he constantly looks to facilitate the ball, accumulating two goals, three assists this season, and five big chances created.

Casemiro has been one of the primary reasons Manchester United has been successful this season and is the best in the League.

 Center Midfielder: Martin Ødegaard

Another midfielder who has been the star of their team, Martin Ødegaard, has been the center point of the league-leading Arsenal squad. The team flows through the play of Ødegaard, who has been an artist in the midfield. This year he has scored eight goals with five assists and 10 big chances created.

Having a guy like Ødegaard in the midfield has massively improved this Arsenal squad and is one of the main reasons they are currently top of the table.

Center Attacking Midfielder: Kevin De Bruyne

Not a surprise, but Kevin De Bruyne has been the best attacking midfielder in the world for the last few years. Nothing has changed this season, as he stays at the performance level we expect from him.

De Bruyne is a magician on the field, and his passes are incredibly impressive. This season he has three goals and 11 assists, with 20 big chances created. He is, as expected, the maestro of their midfield and part of the reason Manchester City are second in the league.

Left Wing-: Marcus Rashford

Marcus Rashford is a man on fire. After a disappointing 2021 season, Rashford has bounced back in extraordinary fashion this season. His mix of speed and skills has made him lethal up top for Manchester United.

Since the World Cup break, Rashford has scored 12 goals in all competitions and has outscored Liverpool and Chelsea combined in 2023. This season he has 10 goals and three assists in the Premier League.

However, it is not just his goals scoring that is impressive, but also who he scores against. Rashford has scored against almost every big six team this season and has almost a .5 goals-per-game percentage.

Right Winger: Bukayo Saka

The young talent Bukayo Saka has only further proven his talent so far this season. The wonder kid has been the other dominant force pairing with Martin Ødegaard in the Arsenal squad. Saka is a right winger for the team and loves to dribble at defenders and cut inside to shoot.

He has been able to do this constantly this season and set up other attacking players. He has accumulated seven goals and seven assists so far this season and does not look like he will be slowing down.

Striker: Erling Haaland

Haaland is a machine, this we know, but some had their doubts when he joined Manchester City in the summer. There are no other words to describe him other than a goal machine. Haaland has scored 25 goals in 20 appearances with a goal-per-game percentage of 1.25. He has already passed last season’s golden boot tally in the Premier League this season, and we are only halfway through the season. Nothing can stop Haaland from scoring.

While the season is only at the halfway point, these players have been the most impressive players throughout the first half of the season.
