After a 17-year football career, Mesut Özil has announced retirement from football after recurrent injuries at his last club İstanbul Başakşehir led him to hang up his boots.

Despite a tragic and quite disappointing ending to his career, Özil has managed to become one of the best attacking midfielders seen from the past decade, building a reputation for being a top assister in all the clubs he’s played, especially Real Madrid and Arsenal, where he had his best years. He also performed big for the German national team, achieving the 2014 World Cup, where he excelled at his best.

For many, Özil remains one of the best playmakers, leaving an excellent career behind.
