Penguins Trade for Cody Glass

The Penguins have completed a trade to acquire Cody Glass from the Nashville Predators. They also acquired a 2025 third-round pick and a 2026 fifth-round pick. General Manager Kyle Dubas continues to make astute moves by adding young talent, taking on salary, and securing future draft capital.

Cody Glass was the 6th overall draft pick by the Las Vegas Golden Knights in 2017. He spent two years with the team, tallying 22 points in 66 games. Glass was then traded to the Predators, where he had a standout season in 2022–2023, achieving career-high goals and assists. He scored 14 goals and totaled 35 points in 72 games. However, injuries limited Glass to 41 games in the most recent season. At 25 years old, he has one year remaining on his contract with a $2.5 million cap hit. This acquisition presents another low-risk, high-reward opportunity for Kyle Dubas and the Penguins.

As free agency approached, Dubas emphasized his desire for younger talents with potential in the bottom six. Glass fits this criteria and is expected to have a fresh start in Pittsburgh, potentially becoming a centerpiece in the youthful bottom 6. However, this raises the question of who will play center. The Penguins currently have Lars Eller, who was a standout player in the struggling bottom six last year. They also acquired veteran centerman Kevin Hayes from the St. Louis Blues through a trade and signed Blake Lizotte to a two-year contract in free agency. This sets the stage for an interesting training camp, as players compete for the limited center positions. With only two spots available, someone may need to transition to a wing position. I would suggest the following lineup for the bottom 6:

Anthony Beauvillier - Kevin Hayes - Valtteri Puustinen

Blake Lizotte - Cody Glass - Lars Eller

The Penguins were also busy earlier in the day with a pick swap involving the St. Louis Blues.

The Penguins had a rare victory, as NHL activity in early August is uncommon. As training camp approaches and Dubas brings in more NHL talent, the camp promises to be intriguing. Additionally, the Penguins still need to sign their franchise cornerstone, Sidney Crosby to a contract extension, to ensure he remains a Penguin for life.
