Ovechkin and Strome Team up for a Shared Milestone
Although the Washington Capitals fell 5-4 in a shootout against the Dallas Stars last night, there were still celebrations to be held. Dylan Strome’s second goal of the game, assisted by Alex Ovechkin and Anthony Mantha, was the 100th of his career and the 1,500th point of Ovechkin’s.
With his secondary assist, Ovechkin became the 16th player in NHL history to reach the milestone. The only other active player to be a member of the 1,500-point club is Sidney Crosby with 1,529 and the closest behind Ovechkin is Evegni Malkin with 1,250.
The former first overall pick in 2004 has had a momentous NHL career that has spanned over nearly 20 seasons. His list of awards and accomplishments is longer than most, but the highlights include the Calder Trophy, Stanley Cup, eight All-Star appearances, a member of the 100 Greatest NHL Players list, and just 67 goals behind Wayne Gretzky for the most career goals in NHL history.
Strome ended up tallying his 100th NHL goal last night, which gave his team a 4-3 lead halfway through the third frame. In 377 career games, the 2015 third overall selection has accumulated 100 goals, 148 assists, for 248 points. Now having found a home and success in Washington, Strome is seemingly bound for the best hockey of his career.
The center is currently playing on the Capitals’ top line with Ovechkin on the left wing and Tom Wilson on his right. Although Strome is accompanied by two superstars, he is still able to shine and stand out on his own. He leads the team in goals with 10 and is no longer linked or compared to well-known names from his past, like Alex DeBrincat and Mitchell Marner. Strome took his time in Chicago to establish himself as NHL-capable, and is now thriving in Washington.
