Boston Bruins hot start continues, improve to 14-0 at home

Ever since the beginning of the 2022-2023 NHL season, the Boston Bruins have been one of the best teams in the league. They were widely expected to struggle at the start of the season due to injuries to key players Brad Marchand and Charlie McAvoy, and a head coaching change, but they have done anything but struggle. Through their first ten games, the Bruins suffered just one loss, during a 7-5 game to the Ottawa Senators in the second half of back-to-back games, and are currently second in the NHL standings with a record of 20-3-0, just one point behind the New Jersey Devils for first place. Their other two losses came in road games against the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Florida Panthers respectively. As a result, they have yet to lose a game at home this season and even broke the NHL record for consecutive wins at home to start a season.

The Bruins have been fairly dominant in all of their home games this season, winning most of them easily. They had a close call on November 1st against the Pittsburgh Penguins, a game they won in overtime after trailing 5-2. The team’s next close call came on Black Friday when they beat the Carolina Hurricanes in overtime after going down 2-0 early. That win against the Hurricanes was their 12th straight win on home ice to open the season, which was the one that broke the record of eleven, previously held by the 1963-1964 Chicago Blackhawks and the Florida Panthers of last season. They beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-1 to extend the streak to 13 games but arguably their biggest test came when the defending champion Colorado Avalanche came to Boston on Saturday night.

The Bruins got to work quickly against the Avalanche when David Pastrnak, who is currently top five in both points and goals in the NHL, scored on the powerplay just under 14 minutes in, and Trent Frederic scored with just under a minute left in the first period to give the Bruins 2-0 lead. Pastrnak would score his second of the game in the second period to go up by three, but Andrew Cogliano scored early in the third for Colorado to make the score 3-1. That would not matter though as nine minutes later, Frederic would score his second, and just ten seconds later, Jake Debrusk scored to put Boston up 5-1. The Bruins went on to win by that score and improve to 14-0 at home.

The B’s home winning streak will face a very tough test when the Vegas Golden Knights, a team that has been almost as hot as Boston this season, make a visit to Boston on Monday night.
