Giants QB Daniel Jones Shut Down For Season: What Lies Ahead

QB Daniel Jones has reportedly been shut down for the remainder of the season, per ESPN’s Jordan Ranaan. Jones has been dealing with an ongoing neck injury the past few weeks. Jones finishes his 2021 season with 2,428 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions. After tossing 24 touchdowns in just 13 games his rookie year, Jones has only thrown 21 touchdowns his past 25 games. This will be the second straight season in which Jones does not eclipse even half of the amount of touchdowns he tossed his rookie season.

The Giants have three games remaining in what will be their fifth straight losing season, enabling them to potentially evaluate their talent going into next season. One player to keep an eye on these next few weeks is QB Jake Fromm.

Following Jones’s injury, QB Mike Glennon was thrown into the starting role. Glennon has gone 0-3 in three starts, amassing 2 touchdowns and 5 interceptions with a 51.2% completion percentage. After a three interception game vs. the Cowboys yesterday, Glennon was pulled. Fromm was given the keys, and put together a drive that stalled at the Dallas 9-yard line. Fromm went 6/12 for 82 yards, including a dime to WR Kenny Golladay that went for 36 yards.

Although the stats may indicate otherwise, Fromm looked impressive for a quarterback who was signed from the Bills practice squad just two weeks ago. He looked poised and experienced, especially with his cadence utilization. In just four minutes, Fromm nearly surpassed Glennon’s total yardage for the entire game. When asked about Fromm’s performance, HC Joe Judge had this to say.

“He got in there and moved the ball well, did some good things, that will obviously open up the conversation in terms of what we’re going to do next week against Philly.’’

In other words: Fromm will be starting this week. The Giants have not had three different starting quarterbacks in a season since 1992.

Fromm will be facing a tall order, given it will be his first start and on the road against a division rival. The Eagles sit at 6-7 and remain in the playoff race, and the fans at Lincoln Financial Field will certainly love to bring the heat on Fromm in his potential first start. However, Fromm has a chance to play spoiler. As many Giants fans remember, the Eagles sabotaged any chances the Giants had of making the playoffs by sitting rookie QB Jalen Hurts in Week 17 of last season. This game had huge playoff implications, and the Washington Football Team ultimately prevailed and secured a spot in the playoffs.

Fromm can do the same here, by burying any playoff hopes for Eagles team that Big Blue has already beaten once this year. These next three games will surely be important in deciding whether or not Fromm secures a roster spot for next season.
