Trevor Lawrence Needs to Step Up

Trevor Lawrence was one of the most hyped up college players of all time leading up to the 2021 NFL Draft, making it was no surprise that he landed first overall to the Jacksonville Jaguars. In a draft where five QB’s were taken in the top 15 with three going top three, Lawrence is the only one still on the team that drafted him. Unfortunately it is unclear if he will even be starting by the end of the season due to lackluster performances and an 0-3 start.

Lawrence at Clemson was one of the best arm talents we have ever seen in all of college football history. He went undefeated as a freshman where he led Clemson to a National title, and would not lose his first game until his sophomore year against LSU in the National Championship game. In three seasons Lawrence was 34-2 as a starter throwing for 10,098 yards, 90 touchdowns to only 17 interceptions. These stats alone will register a first overall pick especially to a team who whiffed on a top 10 QB in the 2011 and 2014 drafts with Blaine Gabbert and Blake Bortles not playing up to their potential.

As the Jags week four matchup approaches, Lawrence this season sits at 0-3, with 560 yards, two touchdowns and a bad interception to Damar Hamlin in week three. He is also completing only 52.8% of his passes in what is currently his worst start since his rookie season. His rookie season was mainly due to the incompetence of head coach Urban Meyer, and with the switch to Doug Peterson everyone thought Lawrence would show his true potential.

Lawrence needs to look to improve this season and if he does not lead the Jaguars to a playoff run in the next two or three seasons, they might pull the plug on him.
