Is Bill Belichick still the best coach in the NFL?

Bill Belichick has been atop the NFL coaching world for quite some time now and is often considered the greatest NFL head coach of all time. He has helped lead the New England Patriots to nine Super Bowl appearances and six wins in his tenure with the team. He has been best known for his defensive coaching ability, as well as his ability to develop great players and coaches.

Over the past few years, Bill Belichick and the Patriots have struggled to live up to the expectations that they have set for themselves based off of all the success they have had over the last 20 years. Many people believe that this is due to Tom Brady’s departure from the team, and raises questions of whether or not Bill Belichick is really the best coach  in the league anymore without the future Hall of Fame quarterback.

The name that comes to mind to rival Belichick for the title of best Head Coach in the NFL is the reigning Super Bowl Champion Sean McVay. The 36-year-old is already entering his sixth season as the head coach of the LA Rams and has had an impressive resume so far to date. He has a .679 win percentage in his time with the Rams and has already coached his team to two Super Bowl appearances including one Super Bowl win last season.

McVay is definitely at the top of the list when it comes to the conversation of the NFL’s best head coach, but is he the clear cut best? One question that makes a lot of sense in this argument is if you gave both of these coaches the worst team in the league who would be the most successful.

Last season it definelty seemed like McVay had much better talent on his roster then Belichick and although the Patriots did not win the Super Bowl they accomplished a lot for a team that lacked a lot of superstars. Belichick was able to coach his team to a playoff appearance with a lot of new and young players, as well as a rookie quarterback.

At the moment it still seems that Belichick is still the best head coach in the game, and if you had given him the same Rams roster I believe that he would have coached the team to a Super Bowl win as well. This season will provide more insight to whether or not McVay has overtaken the title and whether or not Belichick still has the ability to take his team on a deep playoff run.
