giants get thrashed by eagles, setting up a must-win game against washington
East Rutherford, New Jersey (PSF) — The New York Giants were absolutely embarrassed today, losing 48-22 to the NFL’s best record Philadelphia Eagles. While it was a demoralizing loss, the team must flush it quickly as coming up is their second matchup against the Commanders in three weeks. The Giants now sit at 7-5-1, the same record as the Commanders, but in the last NFC Wild Card spot due to having a worse divisional record than Washington.
As for the game today, the Giants were severely outplayed at all three levels. The offensive line struggled to protect Daniel Jones (and eventually Tyrod Taylor) giving up seven sacks to a great Eagles defense. The Giants defense was also severely outmatched without star players Adoree’ Jackson, Xavier Mckinney and Leonard Williams. The Giants gave up 437 total yards to the Eagles, including 253 of them coming on the ground.
The Giants found themselves down 21-0 in the first half, but eventually scored a touchdown to cut the deficit to 14 after a blocked punt. The ensuing kickoff was taken deep in Giants territory and led to an Eagles field goal. The Giants were not able to capitalize on any momentum all day. Also, star running back Saquon Barkley saw only 11 touches for 48 total yards.
Tyrod Taylor came in late to replace Daniel Jones due to the lopsided score. The first drive resulted in a fumble lost deep in their own territory that the Eagles turned into a touchdown, and the second drive led to a garbage time touchdown to Richie James.
After surprising the entire league with a 7-2 start, the Giants now find themselves in must-win territory after going 0-3-1 in their last four games. The Giants must shift their attention to the Commanders whom which they tied just seven days ago. With the playoff race heating up, the Giants must get back in the win column if they want to play in the postseason for the first time since 2016.
