Broncos Week 3 Recap: Another Ugly Win

Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

Another week, another win by the skin of their teeth. The Denver Broncos barely got by with a late fourth quarter touchdown and two defensive turnovers in the last three minutes of play.

The Broncos welcomed the San Francisco 49ers to Mile High Stadium for a prime time match up Sept. 26. Both teams came in at 1-1 but ultimately the Broncos would leave with a winning record through week three while the Niners would fall to 1-2. However, there isn’t that much to be proud of from Denver's perspective.

One could argue the Broncos had a good game. Russell Wilson had a donut in the turnover column, however there was also one in the touchdown column. And Denver only had five penalties compared to the 12 against Seattle. To paint the real picture of this game plagued with punts, 17 to be exact, one must know that the Broncos went three-and-out nine times and allowed San Francisco to score early.

Somehow, the Niners still slipped up enough along the way to allow a Broncos win.

Both teams allowed four sacks each and the Broncos' most reliable man couldn't do his part, missing a 53-yarder late in the third quarter.

My question is did anyone want to win that game? The Niners surely didn't. Jimmy Garappolo waltzed out of the back of the endzone, muffed a snap, and threw an interception. It's not gonna be handed to Denver like that every week. And even so, The Broncos would barely capitalize.

Denver may have escaped the 49ers but playing the way they did this week won’t help them win against division rivals like the Chiefs and Chargers, let alone make the playoffs.

The Broncos have not allowed more than 17 points a game this season, holding the Texans to just nine points and the 49ers to 10. Maybe there is something to say there about their defense. However, what good is a defense with an unproductive offense? Patrick Surtain and the Denver defense can only hold off the attack for so long. Wilson needs to provide some breathing room. Can he do it?
