It only took 13 days for general manager Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus to make a decision on who would be the new signal caller for the Chicago Bears offense. From outside perspective, they got one of the better offensive minds available.

According to Tom Pelissero, the Chicago Bears are, as of yesterday, working on a deal to bring former Seattle Seahawks Offensive Coordinator Shane Waldron to call plays for the offense.

Waldron was among a long list of potential coordinator hires for Poles and company. This list included the likes of former Baltimore Ravens Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman, former Arizona Cardinals and current University of Southern California Trojans Quarterback coach Kliff Kingsbury, Carolina Panthers Offensive Coordinator Thomas Brown, and some other notable candidates. The New Orleans Saints were also in the hunt for Waldron’s services but Poles beat them to it.

Waldron brings a plethora of experience in the NFL and three years as a signal caller for the Seattle Seahawks. He worked under former New England Patriots HC Bill Belichick as a tight ends coach before bouncing around college and the defunct United Football League or UFL. After that, he worked under Rams Head Coach Sean McVay as a tight ends coach before being promoted to passing game coordinator.

In 2021, Waldron became the offensive coordinator for the Seahawks under the now former Head Coach Pete Carroll and was favored by current Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson due to his familiarity with McVay’s offense.

Waldron is one of the names attached to the career resurgence of QB Geno Smith, a man who was labeled as a bust and then last year had a career year and pro bowl recognition.

Waldron now has work to do during the offseason, with many positional coaches for the Bears still vacant, the new-look Bears offense is still yet to be determined. As well as questions about who is going to be the QB for the Bears. Will it be QB Justin Fields or future number one pick in QB Caleb Williams? There are still so many questions left to be answered this offseason for the Bears, but the team is taking a huge step forward after acquiring Waldron.
