Aaron Rodgers Returning to Packers in Record Setting Deal
On March 8th, Aaron Rodgers agreed to a deal with the Packers worth $200 million over 4 years including $153 million guaranteed. This now makes Aaron Rodgers the highest paid NFL player annually at $50 million, surpassing Patrick Mahomes’ $45 million. The last couple months after the Packers were stopped short of their super bowl hopes to the 49ers there was speculation that Aaron Rodgers would not return to Green Bay. Rodgers also posted on Instagram a tribute to his teammates increasing the notion of his departure from the team. On March 8th, the questions on his future were put to rest when he agreed to this new deal.
What this means for the Packers
With Rodgers at quarterback the Packers have made the playoffs 10 out of the last 12 seasons. This deal keeps the Packers as one of the biggest threats in the NFC and the entirety of the NFL. It is no secret that the Packers have cap issues, so given this big move, they will need to restructure other players' contracts as well as potentially lose some key players. Even with a different roster this upcoming season, the Packers will still be in a prime position to dominate the NFC North and make a run in the playoffs. As a result of this new deal, the Packers are likely to franchise tag their star wide reciever Davante Adams. In the upcoming draft the Packers will look to help keep the pressure off of Adams by adding young talent in the wide receiver position. They will also need to draft an offensive tackle after David Bakhtiari missed a majority of the season. Drafting players in both those areas should ensure that the Packers will continue to be a dominant presence in the NFL this season and for years to come.
