VanDerveer is on Top the Mountain
University of Stanford women’s basketball head coach Tara VanDerveer has surpassed coach K for the most wins in NCAA basketball history. VanDerveer’s 1203 win has her sitting on top of the mountain that is the most wins in college hoops. Vanderveer has spent her coaching career with three different schools.
Coach VanDerveer began her coaching career in 1978 at the University of Idaho where she started chasing greatness. In two years at Idaho she was able to obtain a 42-14 record. Her first official win as a head coach in college was against the University of Northern Montana 70-68. In the 1978-79 season she led Idaho to a 17-9 record. The following season she went 25-6.
After the 1979-80 season she moved to her next squad. The next school she went to was THE Ohio State University. Her record at OSU was nothing short of amazing as she amassed a 110-37 record in five seasons.
Her next coaching job and most certainly her most impressive was at the University of Stanford. She joined Stanford in 1985 and has been a part of the program ever since. She has been able to lead the team to three different championships while also winning 17 Pac-12 coach of the year awards. The now 70 year old has been the winningest women’s head coach since 2020. She has now become the winningest head coach in college hoops history. VanDerveer has been the leader of Stanford for 38 years and counting. Her record in those seasons is 1051-216. Since being at Stanford she has not had a losing season since 1986. The team has also been a NCAA Tournament mainstay as they have been a part of it since 1988 and counting.
