SDSU Plans to Resign From Mountain West
San Diego, CA (PSF) - This past week San Diego State University gave a written notice to the Mountain West stating that the school “intends to resign” from the conference. The school also asked for a “one-month” extension given any “unforeseen delays” when trying to find another conference. At the point this article is being written, SDSU has not received an invitation from any power five conference.
Although the letter was given this week, the school cannot officially resign from the conference without giving a notice of at least one year. This means the school will have to wait until next June before the resignation is official, giving the notice anytime past June 30th would cost the school an exit fee of almost 34 million dollars. The exit fee would be only 16.5 million for the school if they give the notice before then.
SDSU plans to explore all possible options, including staying in the Mountain West if need be. The letter from the school was not meant to be an official resignation, but the conference began the withdrawal process for the school. It was clarified from SDSU that this wasn’t an official resignation, they also requested that if they were to resign, they wish to pay the exit in installments. Otherwise, they’d have to pay the fee by June of next year.
With many schools changing conferences over the next couple of years, SDSU should be hopeful of receiving an invitation from a power five conference.
