Big 12 Post Week 6 Power Rankings
1. Oklahoma State (Prev: 1)
OSU was pushed this past week against Texas Tech. Spencer Sanders responded to the threat, although his stat line will not look like it. He was under 50 percent in completion percentage for 297 yards and only one touchdown. The rushing attack was average but did get a couple of scores. Tech outgained OSU by nearly 100 yards, but OSU got a key turnover and didn’t have any themselves. In the end, the Cowboys were too much and won 41-31 and will now move on to Fort Worth to face TCU.
2. Kansas State (Prev: 2)
This was an ugly game where only one touchdown was scored within the first three minutes of the game on an 81-yard pass and run. The rest of the points came on field goals, and the Wildcats had the last one midway through the fourth quarter, putting them ahead 10-9 for the final score. Adrian Martinez threw for 246 yards and one touchdown on only 19 attempts. He added another 77 yards on 19 rushing attempts. Their offense is all about ball control and may look ugly and brutal to watch at times, but it gets the job done.
3. TCU (Prev: 5)
TCU went into a rowdy road environment with a fanbase that had been energized with Kansas’ season up that point and College Gameday on campus and was able to come away with a win. The defense played well in the first half forcing Jaylon Daniels out with an unfortunate injury. In the second half, the offense for both teams made some adjustments, and the points flowed behind them. The game became a back-and-forth affair with some great touchdown catches. Quinton Johnson finished with 14 catches for 206 yards and the game-winning touchdown. TCU now welcomes Oklahoma State with both teams undefeated.
4. Baylor (Prev: 3)
Baylor had the week off and will go on the road to West Virginia for a Thursday night game.
5. Texas (Prev: 7)
Quinn Ewers was back playing for the Longhorns and was more than they needed to beat Oklahoma. Ewers was 21-31 for 289 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. Bijan Robinson added another 130 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries. This game was over early with Oklahoma’s QB play.
6. Kansas (Prev: 4)
Kansas could move the ball in the first half but would make a mistake at the end of a drive, like Daniels’ fumble on the goal line. His injury toward the end of the half put a damper on the game's atmosphere. James Bean, the backup QB, played really well, going 16-24 for 262 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception. Kansas showed their resiliency after losing Daniels and will now get an Oklahoma team in a massive freefall.
7. Texas Tech (Prev: 6)
Joey McGuire pulled out all the tricks for the game. He started a redshirt freshman in Behern Morton, which was his third game played overall this season, was 4-7 on fourth down, with the first attempt being the fourth play of the game, and went for an onside kick after Tech’s first drive resulted in a TD to give them a 7-0 lead. Morton finished 39-62 for 379 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception and looked good in the game. Fourth down was a mixed result, with just over a 50 percent conversion rate, and the onside kick was recovered by a Tech player but was flagged for kick catch interference when an OSU player called a fair catch and wasn’t allowed to catch the ball. There is a lot to like and look forward to after this game.
8. Iowa State (Prev: 8)
Iowa State has a great defense but a struggling offense with Hunter Dekkers in his first year as the starting quarterback. He finished with under 200 yards passing and no touchdowns even though he had 39 attempts. The team overall only 276 offensive yards getting three field goals. They now have to go on the road for a rejuvenated Texas team.
9. West Virginia (Prev: 10)
West Virginia was off and will look to get their first conference win of the season when they welcome Baylor on Thursday night.
10. Oklahoma (Prev: 9)
OUCH! YUCK! That was hard to watch for Sooner Fans. Losing to Kansas State and TCU is one thing, but at least the offense was able to be respectable. This game was essentially over after Texas's first score. Davis Beville finished with a measly 38 passing yards and one interception, and no scores. Three other running backs and a punter attempted a pass, adding another combined one-yard. The offense had a total of 195 yards and was able to score. The nightmare for OU just got shutout by their biggest rival. OU was so bad in the game they were jumped by a team on a bye in my power rankings.
