Wembanyama Joins Historic Company With Rare Triple-Double
The San Antonio Spurs cruised past the Toronto Raptors on Monday, seeing Victor Wembanyama post a momentous stat line.
The first overall pick in last year’s NBA Draft, posted his second career triple-double finishing with 27 points, 14 rebounds, and 10 blocks in only 29 minutes. He also added 5 assists and 2 steals in the blowout win.
This was the first time a player posted a triple-double with blocks since Clint Capela in 2021 with the Houston Rockets. It was also the last time any player blocked at least 10 shots in an NBA game.
Wembanyama’s performance saw him become only the fourth rookie to ever post a triple-double including blocks and the second youngest player to swat at least 10 shots.
More impressively, Wembanyama is now only one of three players to record a stat line of at least 25 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists, and 10 blocks in a game over the previous 40 years. Only David Robinson and Hakeem Olajuwon join him on this list.
Still in his first NBA season, Wembanyama’s performances have seen him reach milestones only a handful of other players have ever reached in their career. The Frenchman, who was labeled a “generational talent” coming into the league, still has many years ahead of him to continue to produce at such a high level.
Could Wembanyama post more triple-doubles with blocks? Is a quadruple-double beyond his reach? Wembanyama certainly has the potential to reach more historic milestones, but only time will tell how many more notable performances he will add to his career, in an already impressive rookie season.
