The trade deadline is only one day away and the Minnesota Timberwolves are already making needed moves.

The trade between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Detroit Pistons is as follows:

Minnesota Timberwolves: Monte Morris

Detroit Pistons: Troy Brown Jr., Shake Milton, and a 2030 second-round pick

New Timberwolves’ guard Monte Morris has only played 6 games in the 2023-2024 NBA season due to a quadriceps injury. In just 11 minutes per game, Morris is only averaging 4.5 points per game (PPG), 2 rebounds per game (RPG), and 1.3 assists per game (APG).

This doesn’t tell the whole story as Morris has proven to be an effective 3-level scorer. In his career, Morris has averaged 10.4 PPG, 4.0 APG, and 2.5 RPG in 348 regular-season games. His efficiency has been great for a bench asset, as he has only had one season below 48% from the field and has only dropped below 38% from three once as well.

Morris should fill a much-needed role with the Timberwolves as well. The Timberwolves have lacked a true proven ball-handler to backup veteran Mike Conley. Morris has played this role many times in his career and has proven to be a great facilitator and scorer in the regular season and playoffs. Dane Moore, a reporter for the Minnesota Timberwolves, lists a important statistic below that shows the maturity that Morris could bring to an immature Timberwolves’ bench:

Morris most likely will join key bench players that will consist of Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Kyle Anderson, and Naz Reid. Morris has the potential to take a lot of offensive pressure of these players, which should in theory give these bench players more open shots. He can also have the versitilaty to join sets that involve the main starters of Anthony Edwards, Jaden McDaniels, Karl Anthony-Towns, and Rudy Gobert.

All in all, the Timberwolves got exactly what they were lacking to look like an actual contending team in the Western Conference. With not giving up any real trade assets, their is a lot to like about this trade for Timberwolves fans.
