Golden State Warriors: 5 Free Agent Targets Still Available

The Golden State Warriors have two standard roster spots remaining, and they have a prime opportunity to bolster their forward and frontcourt depth with many productive unsigned free agents. Christian Wood, PJ Washington, and Kelly Oubre Jr. would be excellent options, but it’s unlikely they take a veteran’s minimum to sign with Golden State. Other free agents like Will Barton and Danny Green would be a bonus, but the Warriors already have plenty of guard depth. Since the Warriors need more forward and center depth behind Draymond Green and Kevon Looney, and can only give out veteran’s minimum deals, these are the five remaining free agents that make the most sense for the Warriors heading into the 2024 season.

T.J. Warren

Considering T.J. Warren once averaged nearly 20 points per game (PPG) on 53 percent from the field and 40 percent from three for a full season makes him a steal if the Warriors can sign him. However, injuries have sidelined Warren for much of the past three seasons since his “Bubble Warren” days. He can’t seem to stay healthy and was relegated to a limited bench role in Brooklyn and Phoenix during the 2023 season. If the Warriors can load manage Warren and play him in a similar role to Otto Porter Jr. as a corner specialist and lengthy defender, Warren can have a massive impact on the Warriors. His defensive versatility and shooting would add some valuable depth behind Andrew Wiggins. The Warriors should do everything they can to sign Warren if he is still a free agent once the 2023 training camp starts.

Bismack Biyombo

If the Warriors are looking for a rim protector behind Looney, Biyombo would be an ideal option. He’s spent the last two seasons backing up Deandre Ayton in Phoenix, but he’s been a rumored free-agent target for the Warriors throughout the past few years. Biyombo gives the Warriors a lob threat and shot blocker that they haven’t really had since JaVale McGee. He wouldn’t necessarily be a high-usage player since the Warriors already have rookie Trayce Jackson-Davis and newly signed Dario Saric, but Biyombo would give the Warriors a different look at the center position. It’s likely Biyombo won’t resign with Phoenix because they already signed a few backup bigs in free agency, but he’d thrive in a fast-paced, motion offense where he can be an energetic sparkplug off the bench.

JaMychal Green

Green only played in spot minutes last season for the Warriors as injuries and a slow start limited his role, but he ended up having a solid season. He averaged a little over six PPG on 54 percent from the field and 37 percent from three while playing big minutes in a few playoff games. Green didn’t necessarily have the expected impact like previous stretch big men on the Warriors like Otto Porter Jr. and Nemanja Bjelica, however, he had one of his best seasons as a pro with the Warriors and was a great veteran off the bench and in the locker room. Considering he hasn’t been picked up by another team yet, Green should be a strong candidate for one of the Warriors’ last roster spots.

Markieff Morris

Morris has been a dependable stretch-four for over a decade in the NBA. He hasn’t played much over the past two seasons, but his toughness, shooting, and experience would make him a perfect fit for the Warriors. His locker room presence would also be invaluable, and he could still contribute in spot minutes if the Warriors want a different look at the power forward or center positions. Morris may prefer somewhere else if he wants a bigger role, but he would still be a great option if the Warriors want to sign him.

Juan Toscano-Anderson

Having already played with the Warriors and growing up in the Bay Area, Toscano-Anderson is an underrated candidate for the Warriors’ remaining roster spots. He broke out in the 2021 season for the Warriors and was possibly their most important utility player down the stretch. However, Toscano didn’t get much playing time once Porter and Bjelica were added to the team for the 2022 season, but Toscano was an important presence in the locker room and always kept a positive attitude. He left for the Lakers this past season to pursue a larger role, but that was never granted. Toscano was traded to the Jazz at the 2023 trade deadline and didn’t play much there either. He would be a great addition to the locker room as a valuable mentor and is a reliable, versatile forward when called upon. Toscano has great familiarity with the Warriors’ system, which would play a major part in a possible reunion.
