UFC president Dana White dropped a bombshell on Saturday, announcing a five-round showdown between current BMF title holder Justin Gaethje (25-4) and former featherweight king Max Holloway (25-7).

This is a matchup of true warriors in the octagon. These are two guys who aren’t afraid to stand in front of anyone and dish out punishment, they also aren’t afraid of taking damage themselves.

how we got here

Gaethje is coming off a highlight head-kick knockout of Dustin Poirier, which netted him the coveted BMF title. The winner of two straight, including 7 of his last 9, Gaethje has earned 12 fight bonuses in 12 UFC contests. He is also a former interim lightweight champion in the organization.

Holloway was last seen sending “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung into retirement with a devastating knockout in Singapore. He has won 4 of his last 5 fights, his only loss being to current UFC featherweight champ Alexander Volkanovski, his third loss against the champion since 2019. Holloway has had notoriously historic striking output during his career, having landed the most significant strikes in UFC history.

These are two men who will look to stand and bang, with very little chance of takedowns or submission. Two words come to mind when thinking about what this fight will be like. Violence Personified.

This is just another potential classic on a card that is full of great-looking matchups. This includes former bantamweight champion Ajamain Sterling making his featherweight debut against 7th-ranked contender Calvin Kattar, former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira facing Armen Tsarukyan, and Zhang Weili defending her strawweight championship against fellow countrywoman Yan Xiaonan.

Gaehtje vs. Holloway could prove to be an early Fight of the Year contender when you look at the resumes of both fighters. With UFC 300 shaping up how it is and more bouts to potentially be announced, we could be looking at one of the most stacked cards in the history of mixed martial arts.
