The Triple Threader - Jul. 8, 2024
Welcome to the Triple Threader, covering three select stories from the world of professional wrestling.
Thank you, Cena
After over two decades in the WWE’s squared circle, John Cena is calling it a career. Arguably considered one of the greatest of all time and a first-ballot Hall-of-Famer, Cena has won 25 championships in WWE, including 16 WWE World Titles, and 5 United States crowns. Cena plans to wrestle multiple dates from January to December of next year, including WrestleMania.
The Golden Bank Heist
Money in the Bank weekend was a gold rush in Toronto. First on Friday’s SmackDown, Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa won their first main roster titles, as they defeated Grayson Waller & Austin Theory for the WWE Tag Team Championship. Drew McIntyre and Tiffany Stratton won their respective Money in the Bank ladder matches this past Saturday, but the former would lose his contract and his title shot when he cashed in during the Seth Rollins/Damien Priest World Heavyweight Championship match and CM Punk interfered, guaranteeing a successful title defense from an albeit unamused Priest. On NXT Heatwave, Ethan Page shocked the world when outlasted Ja’Von Evans, Shawn Spears, and former champ Trick Williams to become the new NXT Champion.
Good to see Ya, DMD
For the first time in ten months, Dr. Britt Baker, DMD returns to AEW Dynamite to discuss her absence, including a transient ischmeic attack that showed signs of a stroke and paralyzed the right side of her body. The former AEW Women’s World Champion is now cleared, but was interrupted by NJPW Strong and TBS Champion Mercedes Moné, who first met during Forbidden Door 2024 when Moné celebrated her Strong title win. The conversation got heated when the CEO asked the Doctor to get to the back of the line, to which Baker replied, “B***h, what line?”
