Potential Fights for the UFC 300 Main Event

UFC President Dana White has yet to announce what fight will headline the much anticipated UFC 300. The only piece of news that we have received regarding the headliner is that it is going to be a huge one. White took to Instagram Live on Thursday and fielded a question regarding when the fight will be announced.

"When will you get the main event?" White read out a comment. "You guys can't handle the main event. We're working on a couple of different options. Trust me, the UFC 300 main event is going to be crazy. We have a couple of options for the main event. I'm still playing with it. When it's time, I will give it to you."

This does not shed much light on who could be headlining this card, but it has left fans’ mouths watering in anticipation. There have been some rumors regarding certain potential fights, and it seems appropriate to address these possibilities to see which ones will make the most noise in the sport.

1: Leon Edwards vs Belal Muhammad 2 (WElterweight Championship)

Since Leon Edwards knocked Kamaru Usman with the head kick heard around the world, he has become England’s prodigal son. He most recently defeated Colby Covington via unanimous decision in December 2023 in a contest that was considered largely underwhelming by many fans’ assessment. Belal Muhammad is most certainly one of the most disliked fighters in the community at the moment, and his style of grinding out his opponents to a decision is not exactly fan friendly. However this would be a rematch as their first meeting resulted in a no contest due to an eye poke by Edwards. Although this is something we were all prepared for, it would not be a terrible idea to make this the headliner.

2: Nate Diaz vs Jorge Masvidal 2 (Welterweight bout)

This clash of two superstars first took place at UFC 244 in November 2019 and was for the newly made BMF Title. The fight was entertaining, but ended very anticlimactically as a cut over Diaz's eye caused the doctor to stop the fight in the fourth round. Although Masvidal did announce his retirement after his fight with Gilbert Burns at UFC 287 in April 2023, he recently posted via X that he was back in the UFC and was looking for another fight. The star power of these two is undeniable, and although it would not be for a title of any kind, it would be quite compelling to see what would happen in the later rounds had the doctor not stopped their first fight.

3: Israel adesanya vs khamzat chimaev (Middleweight bout)

Although either one of these fighters could challenge for the belt in their next fight, this would be a definitive title eliminator in the middleweight division. Adesanya has yet to fight since his unanimous decision loss to Sean Strickland at UFC 293 in September 2023. Chimaev’s last outing was a unanimous decision victory over former Welterweight Champion, Kamaru Usman at UFC 294 in October 2023. The term styles make fights certainly applies here, as this would be a premium striker versus grappler matchup with both men being at the top of the heap in their respective styles. The similar layoff coupled with the hype surrounding them both would be a very good pick to headline UFC 300.
