Mercury Done With Diggins-Smith?
Skylar Diggins-Smith, a WNBA vet and a now questionable guard for the Mercury, has been on maternity leave this season. But is Phoenix not pleased with it? Earlier this month, Skylar responded to a fan on Twitter when it was noticed that the Mercury did not wish her a happy birthday. She went on to say that they were “not going to acknowledge” her this year and that it was okay. She then stated, “We’re not affiliated unless it’s the checks…per management. I can’t even use the practice facility or resources.”
Now abiding by the WNBA’s recent collective bargaining agreement, the Mercury has been having to pay Diggins-Smith her full salary while she’s on maternity leave. However, they have barred her from using any of their facilities, and she is not allowed access to their personal trainers, massage therapists, chef, strength and conditioning, etc. When asked about this matter, interim coach Nikki Blue said they give players on maternity leave their personal space. Blue then proceeded to direct the conversation to their game against the Atlanta Dream. The WNBA said it had no comment on the matter and has remained silent since Skylar’s posts.
Before Skylar left on maternity leave, she had a rocky relationship with Diana Taurasi and former head coach, Vanessa Nygaard. However, Skylar was leading the team in scoring and assists, making her a crucial asset to the team. Ironically, Diggins-Smith’s contract with the Mercury is up after the season. Has the relationship between Phoenix and Skylar become too tarnished, or will she suit up for the Mercury next season?
