What`s Next for “Chaos” Covington
Colby “Chaos” Covington is one of the biggest names in UFC today. While he is known for his trash talking, the number #1 ranked welterweight in the world can back it up in the octagon as well. Like him or hate him, the man can fight. He continued to show the world with a decisive victory over his biggest rival and former teammate, Jorge Masvidal, last Saturday, at UFC 272. Many people are wondering what's next for Colby Covington, considering he may not fight for a title anytime soon.
Dustin Porier
In a press conference post fight interview following his UFC 272 victory, Covington expressed his desire in fighting Dustin Poirier. That fight is possible because according to Covington, Nate Diaz, who many thought was scheduled to be Porier's next opponent, is set to fight Conor McGregor. In the interview, Covington also stated in his eyes he thought Poirier had been constantly talking trash about him in the media, saying that when they see each other, “it's on site”, meaning they may not have to wait for the octagon. Porier had also told Covington that if they fight, he will end up going to jail for his actions.
Potential Blockbuster pay-per-view?
Covington also told the press that he wants to be an active fighter this year and would like for this fight to happen in July. Coincidentally, that is around the same time that undisputed welterweight champion Kamaru Usman stated that he would be looking to fight if everything goes well with his recovery from his hand surgery. Usman Plans to defend his title against Leon Edwards whenever he's fully recovered. Imagine if Dana White scheduled both of those fights on the same pay-per-view card. We could see Covington versus Poirier as the Co-main event along with Usman versus Edwards. That fight card would have the potential to be the biggest fight card of the year since UFC 268.
Number one contender match?
As everyone is well aware, Khamzat Chimaev is to face Gilbert burns on April 9th for UFC 273. During the UFC 272 post fight conference, Dana White was asked by media reporter if this is looking like it's going to be a number-one-contender’s match for the welterweight championship? Dana responded by saying, “It looks that way.” while making this a number-one-contender’s match sounds like the obvious choice, I wouldn't be surprised if Covington has something to say about it. Colby Covington is already the #1 ranked welterweight and a win over Dustin Poirier this summer would further distance himself from the rest of the contenders. This is why I would not be surprised if Covington were to push Dana White have the winner of the Burns and Chimaev go through him for the number one contender’s spot. With all this being said, it seems like Colby Covington has a lot of options of what he wants to do next in order to get back to the top for a title shot. I'm very excited to see what the summer holds for the UFC.
