Anthony Volpe is currently the youngest player to play for the New York Yankees and one of the youngest players to ever hold the position of Shortstop in Yankee history. Yet, many fans wonder if it’s okay for the 22-year-old, to play one of the most demanding positions in baseball. In short, the answer is yes, despite being 22-years-old his stats are not bad.

Volpe joined the New Yankees on March 26, 2023, At just 21-years-old. Within the short amount of time has joined he has made some accomplishments worth noting. During the game against the Oakland Athletics on May 10, 2023, Volpe made his first grand slam at the shortstop position, the Yankee’s first rookie to ever do so.

On May 13th, 2023 just two months after he joined the major leagues, during the game against the Tampa Bay Rays, Volpe set a record as the first player to stake his first 13 career bases without being caught.

Volpe has scored nine home runs, seven of which have been throughout May and June, and he does have a good hitting rate of about 44.4%, meaning he does hit the ball pretty regularly. Not bad, for someone who has just started out in the Major Leagues.

The reason for some doubt regarding his capabilities is not unfounded. Volpe does have areas where he could improve. His slugging average could be higher, which right now rests at .353 and so could his batting average, at .188. These numbers may worry fans, but it’s important to remember these numbers aren’t dangerously low. He is only a rookie, he just started out in the big leagues and needs time to adjust. He’s young but, clearly full of potential and skill let’s just wait a bit, and see if he finds his footing.
