On Thursday, February 16th it was announced that Tim McCarver had died at the age of 81 from heart failure. McCarver was a well known figure within the baseball world. He had a known presence on the field and off. He had his first MLB debut with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1959, when he was only 17-years-old. McCarver was a key player for the Cardinals during his time on the team, which was a majority of his MLB career. When he wasn’t a star player for the Cardinals he was making an impact on the Phillies, the team he spent his final appearance on the field with in 1980.

One of McCarver’s most notorious moments during his career was when he hit a home run during the tenth inning of game five of the world series breaking the tie between the Cardinals and the New York Yankees. Eventually leading to McCarver accumulating two world series rings. To add on to his roster of achievements, while he was playing for the Cardinals McCarver was the first catcher in the National League to lead in triples.

When McCarver’s career on the field finished, he turned to broadcasting. He had worked at a couple broadcast stations before ending up at Fox Sports. As a broadcaster McCarver presented 23 World Series games setting a record as well as earning himself multiple Emmy Awards.

The loss of McCarver is an unfortunate one for the MLB and broadcasting network. He contributed many things to the industry and will be missed by many.
