An Analysis of the Top Three Teams in the American League West

All statistics are relevant as of 6/15/22

Houston Astros:

The Astros (39-24) are currently dominating the American League West. Houston seemingly has no competition in their division, with the Rangers trailing behind nine-and-a-half games. The Astros bullpen threw a historic game May 15, when pitchers Luis Garcia and Phil Maton both threw immaculate innings. In baseball, an immaculate inning is a rare occurrence wherein a pitcher has to strike out three batters in a singular inning, with nine pitches thrown. The Astros’ two immaculate innings were the first time two immaculate innings have occurred in the same game in the history of baseball. The Astros historic game furthered their lead in the American League West. By the looks of it, the Astros will remain the reigning American League West champions.

Texas Rangers:

Everyone loves a good underdog story. The Rangers (29-33) have made quite the comeback this season. The Rangers are currently battling the Angels for second place. The Rangers trail the Astros by nine-and-a-half games. The Rangers are now on a two-game losing streak and have to step it up if they want to remain competitive against the Angels.

Los Angeles Angels:

To say the Angels are this season’s biggest disappointment would be an understatement. The Angels (29-34) were dominating the American League West earlier this season, but now they fired the beloved Joe Maddon and are on a rampant losing streak. After being swept by the Dodgers, the Angels have continued to spiral.
