A Home Run, The Best Scoring Play In All Of Sports

A home run, a dinger, a moonshot, a big fly, all are synonyms for the most exciting way to score in all of sports. While there are many emphatic scoring plays like touchdowns, three-pointers, dunks, and slap-shots from the blue line, none of these plays can top the homer. Allow me to set the scene. It’s September 26th, 2021. The Milwaukee Brewers can win the NL Central with a win against the Mets. Over 43,000 fans pack American Family Field on a bright sunny day for the last home game of the regular season. They’re hoping to see their team punch a ticket to the playoffs. I’ve got great seats. I’m thirteen rows up on the third-base line. The Brewers trail the Mets 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning. Kolten Wong stands on first base, and Willy Adames steps into the box for his first at-bat of the day. He gets a 2 seam fastball up in the zone and he doesn’t miss it. I hear the unmistakable crack of the bat. It’s as if that sound makes time move in slow motion. 43,000 plus pairs of eyes are all fixated on that little white ball with red seams as it hangs up in the air. 43,000 people are holding their breath, and 43,000 people are silent but ready to erupt. Then, the ball leaves the yard. It’s a 434-foot blast into the second deck and the crowd of 43,000 rises to their feet and explodes in cheers. Fireworks popping in the air, as I’m high-fiving anyone and everyone around me that has a raised hand. All of this celebration is for two first-inning runs. What other play in all of sports leaves fans, players, coaches, and even the peanut guy frozen in time? No matter if it occurs at the beginning of the game or the end, the excitement doesn’t change. For that one moment, there was pure joy for me and everyone in the stadium, except for the Mets of course. The home run, the most exciting play in all of sports.
