World Cup Spotlight: Group B

As an American, this is the group I'm most excited about. Not only is the United States in this group but also England, which will make for quite an interesting fixture. Of course, Wales also being in this group makes it even more interesting, and fans of all three nations cannot wait for the matchups.

England

Coming off appearances in the 2020 Euro final and 2018 World Cup semifinal, England are group favorites for a reason. However, recent struggles in the Nations League have fans and pundits concerned about England’s chances in Qatar. In addition, questions are being asked about Gareth Southgate and whether he is the right man for the job. All of these concerns are real, but I believe England will still be able to go deep in this World Cup thanks to their squad's talent and depth. With the squad England has, it is hard to produce a bad lineup, which is why I’m confident England will top Group B. However, due to managerial concerns, I doubt England will make it further than they did in 2018 unless their form turns around before heading to Qatar.

USA

After missing the 2018 World Cup, this United States squad is hungry to prove themselves on the world's biggest stage. This, coupled with exciting young players like Giovanni Reyna, Christian Pulisic, and Tim Weah, things are looking up for the United States in 2022. In the past, the biggest problem for United States soccer was its lack of talent in Europe's top leagues. However, many more young Americans are now playing for top European teams, and the number is growing yearly. The biggest concern this year is the lack of World Cup experience, with very few (if any) of the American squad going to Qatar having competed in a World Cup. However, this could also be a blessing if the United States can turn their inexperienced team into a team that plays with no fear and with nothing to lose. If all goes well in Qatar, I truly believe that a quarterfinal appearance is on the cards for this American team.

Wales

Wales defeated Ukraine 1-0 on June 5 for the final spot in the World Cup, securing their first World Cup appearance since 1958. It's hard not to feel happy for Gareth Bale, who has won everything at the club level but enjoyed little success for Wales. Watching Wales play, you can see how much this means to him and his countrymen. However, aside from the feel-good factor, I do not see Wales making much noise in Group B. The core of their team is far past its prime, and overall, they have one of the older teams in the tournament. Nevertheless, I can see Wales taking points from England as it is a big rivalry, and Wales will want to win that game more than anything. Other than that, I do not see Wales making it out of Group B.

Iran

Similar to Wales, I do not see Iran making much noise in this group. With very few players playing in quality European clubs, Iran is not at the level of England, the United States, or even Wales. History also is not on Iran’s side as they have never progressed past the group stage in their six World Cup appearances. Of course, anything can happen, but unless there is a miracle, Iran will be going home after the group stage.
