Who is the Top Striker in the World? Lewandowksi vs Benzema

There are many top class strikers in world football today. Many possess different qualities and attributes for the position. In my opinion, the top two strikers in the world are Robert Lewandowski and Karim Benzema. Many might consider Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané, Kylian Mbappé, and others as strikers, which is completely fair. When I personally think of a true number nine, however, I look at a target man who is only looking to score goals above everything else and is positioned in the center of the field at all times. Some of the players I consider a true number nine are Robert Lewandowski, Karim Benzema, Harry Kane, and Erling Halaand.  Lewandowski and Benzema are at the top of the striker list.

Lewandowski, once again, had a prolific goal scoring season for Bayern Munich leading all of Europe with 35 goals in 34 Bundesliga matches. The man continues to put up absurd goal scoring totals year in and year out. He has won numerous Bundesliga titles and recently won a Champions League in the 2019-20 season. He was also deserving of the Ballon d’Or in that same season but the award was not given because of the altered season schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic. An absolute scoring machine, Lewandowski has shown consistently that he is one of the top strikers in the world.

Benzema has always been considered a top striker throughout his career but has recently shown an improved form that has launched him to a whole new level. He is tied for third with Ciro Immobile for European top goal scorers but leads the Champions League with 15 goals. Watching him in the Champions League, I noticed great confidence and swagger when he touched the ball. It felt like every time he shot it was going to go in. With the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale’s lack of form, Benzema is the clear cut number one option in the attack. He has flourished as the number one option.

Lewandowski and Benzema are top class strikers. Both are deserving to be thought of as the top striker in the world. Lewandowski has shown great consistency in goal scoring over the last decade and does not seem like he is slowing down any time soon. Benzema has been able to elevate his game to a new standard since the departure of Ronaldo. At this moment, I would have to say that Benzema is the best striker in world football due to the impact he has on his team by scoring goals in the moments that matter most. He also has a huge chance of being recognized as the best player in the world once the Ballon d’Or is presented in October.
