The Canadian women’s soccer team is on a strike! They are protesting the program cuts and their concerns with pay equality. The team released a statement on Twitter on Feb. 10th concluding their thoughts. In it states, “We are tired-tired of constantly having to fight for fair and equal treatment and for a program that will give us a chance to achieve what we know this team is capable of achieving for Canada.” The team is frustrated as they are receiving this news just a few months away from their biggest game at the Women’s World Cup. This is a big event in which they are expected to perform at a “world-class level without the same level of support that was received by the Men’s National Team in 2022.” The consequences of these cuts fall on the team, and they feel disrespected for it. In the tweet they mention the results of the cut has led the team to cut training camp days, cut the number of players and staff invited into the camps, as well as limit youth activities. They also had uncertainties about compensation, and they will no longer have a home game before heading to the World Cup. They argue “we expect and deserve nothing less than to be treated equally and fairly and to have our program - and our World Cup preparations - funded appropriately.” The team is determined to do anything to finally receive the proper support they deserve and they have begun doing so by creating public awareness.
