UEFA Europa League Recap: Manchester United Victorious in Moldova Against Sheriff

MANCHESTER — The Red Devils’ Europa League campaign is back on track, thanks to a 2-0 win over Sheriff.

Sancho opened the scoring thanks to a brilliant team move in the 17th minute, followed by a clean Ronaldo penalty kick in the 39th minute. The goal was Ronaldo’s first this season in all competitions and his first ever Europa League goal.

Manchester United came into this game with fresh legs, considering the cancellation of all Premier League games following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. Their last game was a 2-1 loss to Real Sociedad at Old Trafford. The Red Devils had a rough start to the League this season, suffering a 2-1 loss to Brighton and a painful 4-0 loss to Brentford.

However, the only way to go when you’re down is up. Since that loss, Manchester United have won all of their games, beating the likes of Liverpool 2-1 and Arsenal 3-1. They currently stand fifth on the Premier League table and second in their Europa League group. Sheriff was having an unbeaten of their own before hosting Manchester United. They currently sit atop the Moldovian Super Liga table with 17 points and three points following a 3-0 win against Omonia in the Europa League.

The game started off well in Ten Hagg’s men’s favor, with the side getting chance after chance. Eventually, their first goal came thanks to Jadon Sancho’s effort, which found the bottom corner after a class team move. Ronaldo doubled their score thanks to a penalty in the 39th minute, where he sent the keeper to the side and buried the shot right down the middle.

It’s fair to say that Ten Hagg has found the form he desires with his team. Manchester United may have had rough starts to their campaigns, but they seem to have found their footing. It took some time, but they have made some key signings this past summer window, bringing in midfield reinforcements in the shape of Christian Erikson and Casemiro and new attacking options with Antony. The revival of Marcus Rashford is another thing fans can be ecstatic about. The team is starting to find its footing after a disappointing year which they’ll want to put behind them quickly.

Manchester United will not be playing this weekend, which will once again see them well rested when they travel to Cyprus for their next Europa League game against Omonia. Sheriff will host Zimbru today in the Moldovian Super Liga.
