SYDNEY, Australia - After a month of anticipation, the day had finally come: the FIFA’s Women’s World Cup final, the cherry-on-top to a competition that only happens once every four years. This final may not have had a lot of goals, but it certainly delivered in other ways. 

It was a cagey affair early, with both teams challenging to possess the ball. After several chances were exchanged early, Olga Carmona powered one home to give Spain a 1-0 lead. Spain would get the opportunity to double their lead after England’s Keira Walsh was determined to have had her arm in an unnatural position in the penalty box. Unfortunately for Spain, Jenni Hermoso had her spot-kick saved by English goalkeeper Mary Earps. 

Spain would manage to hold on, winning the game 1-0. At the final whistle, one could tell what it meant to the players on both sides. For England, their players were understandably teary-eyed and devastated. Conversely, Spain’s players were exuberant, crying tears of joy, smiling, cheering, and hugging each other.

In many ways, this Women’s World Cup final was different from many of the others. Before this final, neither Spain nor England had ever made the championship of the Women’s World Cup. Moreover, this final was perhaps the clearest sign that the USWNT’s reign in world soccer was over. Whether these two teams will continue to rise or have already reached their apex is something that will be analyzed in the coming tournaments, but for now, just enjoy the amazing tournament that was the 2023 edition of the Women’s World Cup.
