Break Down of Premier League Teams’ Champions League Performances This Week
Manchester United Faced off against Young Boys Tuesday in a group game for the Champions League. Cristiano Ronaldo led off for United by scoring in the 13th minute to put United ahead 1-0 with an assist by Bruno Fernandes.
In the 35th minute, Aaron Wan-Bissaka received a red card for stamping on one of the midfielder’s feet. This was definitely a blow to United, as they would have to play the rest of the game with only 10 men on the pitch.
Young Boy’s first goal came in the 66th minute by Nicolas Ngamaleu with an assist by Silvan Hefti.
With the additional 5 minutes of extra time, the Young Boys would score in the 95th minute to pull ahead of United 2-1 on a misjudged back pass from Jesse Lingard, the goal being scored by Theoson Jordan Siebatcheu.
This win puts the Young Boys in first place in Group F with 3 points, while Manchester United is at the bottom with zero. Atalanta and Villarreal both currently have one point each.
Tuesday also saw Chelsea facing off against Zenit. A little bit of a shaky start for Chelsea in the first few minutes, but they recovered quickly. However, Azpilicueta of Chelsea drew a red card in the 45th minute for throwing his arm out and catching Azmoun in the face. The first half would stay scoreless, with Chelsea eventually wearing down Zenit and Romelu Lukaku scoring in the 69th minute to put Chelsea ahead 1-0. This would be the final score, with Chelsea finishing the game with 66% of the overall possession and 11 total shots to Zenit’s 6 shots. Chelsea now sits tied in Group H with Juventus at 3 points each, with Zenit in 3rd place and zero points.
Manchester City went up against RB Leipzig yesterday in Group A. For Manchester City, the Champions League trophy has been just out of their reach for the last few seasons. City had a very strong start on the ball and would continue to dominate the entirety of the game. In the 12th minute, Zinchenko would pick up a yellow card for catching Olmo in the face with his arm. Manchester City would then pick up a goal in the 16th minute off a corner by Grealish to Aké who put a header right past the keeper. City scored again in the 28th minute when De Bruyne fired a cross in, however it was ruled an own goal, as it hit a defender’s head in order to go in. RB Leipzig would score one goal before the end of the half in the 42nd minute-Nkunku would put one past Ederson. Manchester City’s answer to that goal was to come back in the 2nd minute of extra time and score on a penalty kick, with Riyad Mahrez sweeping it into the top right corner. The next Manchester City goal would come in the 51st minute, once again coming from an own goal by Nkunku. A prime example of City capitalizing on their oponest’’s mistakes. Jack Grealish also joined the onslaught of goals for City when in the 56th minute he had a lovely strike with his right foot, restoring the two goal advantage for City. Several substitutions would come in the 59th and 60th minutes for both teams, City still having the advantage. A goal would not be counted in the 66th minute for Torres, as he was just slightly offside. Nkunku would get his hat trick technically, when he was responsible for another own goal in the 73rd minute, putting City up 4-3, with another goal for City coming a few minutes later from Cancelo in the 75th minute, making it 5-3 very quickly. A red card would come for Angelino of RB Leipzig with a clumsy challenge on Cancelo. Manchester City would finish the match with one final goal from Gabriel Jesus, who had just entered the game, making the final score 6-3, and putting Manchester City at the top of Group A with 3 points and RB Leipzig at the bottom with zero.
The final Premier League team to play their group game was Liverpool, going up against AC Milan in Group B. Liverpool had a strong grip on the possession for the beginning of the game, and had two chances in the 4th and 6th minutes, before an own goal put Liverpool up 1-0 in the 9th. In the 13th minute, Liverpool received a penalty off a handball by Bennacer of Milan. Salah took the penalty kick, however, it was saved by the Keeper, keeping the game 1-0 for now. Milan would rally to tie the game in the 42nd minute with Ante Rebic putting a low shot past Alisson, making the game 1-, then quickly getting another one in the 44th minute with a tap-in by Brahim Diaz. The half would end with Milan up 2-1. In the 48th minute, Salah would make up for missing that penalty kick by playing the ball into the bottom corner to put Liverpool up 2-1, with the assist going to Origi. At this point, you can see Milan struggling a bit, putting Olivier Giroud in as a substitution in the 62nd minute. Liverpool’s final goal came off of a corner kick by Trent Alexander-Arnold to Jordan Henderson who hit it on the half-volley, putting Liverpool up 3-2 in the 69th minute. With a few more substitutions for both teams, and James Milner receiving a yellow card for sticking his leg out, the game would end after 6 minutes of extra time, putting Liverpool first in Group B with 3 points, and placing Milan at the bottom with zero.
