Man United 1-2 Brighton: A disappointing opener to the new season

Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United started their 2022-23 Premier League campaign with a disappointing 1-2 loss over Brighton & Hove Albion. Cristiano Ronaldo was benched for the first half of the game, while Brighton’s midfielder Pascal Groß stunned the crowd at Old Trafford twice, giving them the first lead. Ronaldo was sub-in during the second half, but Brighton’s defense managed to stay focused throughout the rest of the game. Unfortunately, Alexis Mac Allister’s own goal wasn’t enough for United to turn the tide.

In their first Premier League game under new manager ten Hag, United clearly showed intent to take control of the game. With the addition of Christian Eriksen - arguably United’s best player against Brighton - through balls and build-up plays have been more confidently executed. However, the connections between attackers up front weren’t there, and the false nine formation wasn’t helping either.

As a result, Rashford missed important chances that would’ve impacted the game differently. Sancho and Bruno Fernandes were able to hold on to the ball in several possessions and helped with ball distribution, but Bruno needed to find his touch back quickly. He has been underperforming since the end of last season, and in this match, he would often lose the ball in dangerous positions.

Fred and Scott McTominay once again proves that they aren’t the answer to the United’s defensive midfielder question. McTominay failed to provide anything but the energy in the midfield, and Fred was subbed out for Ronaldo in the second half. Lisandro Martinez looked comfortable on the ball. Even so, one game isn’t enough to fully judge his defensive capabilities, especially since United conceded on two fast counter-attacks.

Brighton was able to capitalize on United’s lack of connection, scoring two simple yet effective goals within nine minutes. United might look better with Ronaldo during attacks in the second half. Nonetheless, Brighton also let United take over the match and focus on protecting their lead.

With Anthony Martial out due to injury, Elanga, Garnacho too young, and Rashford not living up to expectation - Erik ten Hag’s decision on Cristiano Ronaldo will be key for United’s frontline against Brentford next week. Donny van de Beek also made an appearance from the bench, another option that can be considered if ten Hag wants to shake things up in the midfield.
