Atletico started off the game strong and only nine minutes into the game Thomas Lemar scored from Renan Lodi’s cross into the back post, but the goal was disallowed for offside. Their disappointment didn’t last long, as Joao Felix scored a header in the 11th minute. Alaves had a clear chance to tie the game in the first half after a Luis Rioja strike, however, Jan Oblak was quick off his line to save the shot. The visitors were able to equalize after the hour mark when a pin-point cross by Edgar Mendez was headed powerfully by Gonzalo Escalante for 1-1.

Atletico kept creating chances and went back in front when defender Florian Lejeune tackled Matheus Cunha in the box, awarding a penalty for the Colchoneros. Super-sub Luis Suarez made not mistake from the penalty spot for 2-1. Joao Felix got in the scoresheet again after tucking in a rebound after Cunha was denied by the Alaves goalkeeper. And there was still time for Suarez to score a second goal to finish the game off 4-1.

Atletico are currently 4th in the La Liga table. Their next game will be this Tuesday when they travel to England to face Manchester City for the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.
