Hee-Chan Hwang Has Found His Form

In 27 league matches with 12 starts last season, Wolves attacker Hee-Chan Hwang tallied just three goals. In 2023, the South Korean has already doubled his total from last campaign, netting six goals in 10 EPL matches thus far. Along with standout performances from Pedro Neto, Hwang has been a bright spot for a mid-table Wolverhampton side.

It hasn’t just been the number of goals that Hwang has scored, it’s also been the timing of them. Five of the forwards’ six goals have come in the second half, with three of them being either game-winning or game-tying. Alongside his lone assist, the South Korean has been directly involved with more than half of Wolves’ 13 scores.

Hwang has been a consistent figure on match days for Wolverhampton since arriving from Red Bull Leipzig in 2021. While not always a starter, the versatility of the ex-Bundesliga player has made him an indispensable figure for a Wolves side that has struggled to find the back of the net. Hwang’s ability to play as a lone striker or as a pacey winger is something that has made keeping him off the scoresheet particularly difficult. With a keen poaching sense and the capability of maneuvering past defenders, the South Korean is always a goal threat.

The attacker’s time at Wolves has not always been smooth sailing, however, Hwang’s relentless effort has won him favor with the Molineux faithful. The South Korean has scored in his side's biggest games this season, finding the back of the net against Newcastle, Aston Villa, Manchester City, and Liverpool.

After losing four out of the first five games, Wolverhampton has gone unbeaten for five straight contests. Hwang and Wolves are set for a matchup with last place Sheffield United on Saturday.
