Fergie Time Is Back

Manchester United have had one of the worst starts to the Premier League season in the club’s history. At 4-0-4, United have lost to some tough opponents, but have been riddled with injuries with the likes of Lissandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, and several other defenders that have seen quality game time for the Red Devils.

Saturday was another tough test at Old Trafford versus the Bees of Brentford. Starting 1-4-3 is not the record of a team that is contending, but they play hard and have had some unlucky results this season. A main reason as to why they have not been getting better results is mainly in part due to them not having their star striker, Ivan Toney, who is suspended due to evidence of him betting.

Brentford jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute via a Mathias Jensen strike. It seemed as if Brentford would come into United’s home ground, which they have not won in over 50 years, and take all three points.

Though, academy graduate and Scotland international Scott McTominay had other plans. After getting subbed on in the dying embers of the game, Scott managed to bag two late goals and snatch the win from Brentford.

It seemed to be a classic snatch and grab, with the term “Fergie Time” being thrown out due to the fact that United, when under the legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson, won several games in the late stages of games. The term is more than just scoring a late winner, however, it symbolizes the epitome of what it means to play for Manchester United. Never quit until the final whistle.

Sir Alex’s wife, Cathy, was a pivotal role in keeping Sir Alex as the manager of United. Cathy died on Friday, at the age of 84, surrounded by her loved ones. The term “Fergie Time” came into play for the first time in a long time, and it just so happened to be the first game after her passing.

Some wonder why they call soccer “The Beautiful Game” and it is for moments as such. Fergie Time had a deeper meaning in this game and it showed. R.I.P Cathy, this one was for you.
