Dybala to Roma: Jose’s magic back at it again

In one of the most surprising transfers in this window, Paulo Dybala is off to AS Roma. The Argentinian forward has agreed to a three-year contract to join Jose Mourinho’s side as a free agent.

Dybala reportedly joining AS Roma on a 3-year deal.

As reported by multiple Italian press outlets, Mourinho, AS Roma’s manager, had directly contacted Dybala to explain his project and personally convince the player. Again, Mourinho reminded all of us why he is “The Special One.” One of the most decorated managers of all time - Mourinho seems to have found his new home at Roma, where he gained immense support from the board of directors from day one. Mourinho got the final say in transfer activities, which ended with AS Roma winning the UEFA Conference League last season. The young and hungry Roma squad will benefit from a proven, experienced player like Dybala.

Will Roma reclaim their success under Mourinho?

Despite being heavily linked to Inter Milan at the beginning of summer, Dybala finally chose Rome instead to be his next destination after leaving Turin. Going from a rebuilding Juventus side to AS Roma isn’t necessarily a downgrade, and with the 2022 World Cup in sight, Roma will certainly provide Dybala more opportunities for playing time. As for Inter, they won’t be affected by this decision. Getting Romelu Lukaku back from Chelsea means we will probably see the striker duo of Lukaku-Lautaro up front again. With the addition of Edin Dzeko, Alexis Sanchez, and Joaquin Correa, Inter already has many attacking options.

Whatever happens, this seems like a career-defining move from Dybala. He will sacrifice Champions League football to be the key player in Mourinho’s project at Rome. AS Roma's greatest player of all time, Francesco Totti, had publicly offered Dybala the legendary No. 10 shirt. Hopefully, we will see the best of Dybala in Rome next season and at the 2022 World Cup for Argentina.
