Will Jesse Marsch sacking set back American soccer?
Two wins in 19 games was definitely not in the game plan for 49-year-old American coach Jesse Marsch when he began the season. Since the new year began, Marsch was under the floodlights as Leeds was struggling, but defeat at the weekend to Nottingham Forrest was the final blow.
Almost a year after signing his three-year contract with Leeds United, Marsch is now on the lookout for another job as he was sacked on February 6. Despite bringing in USMNT talents such as Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson and, most recently, new January transfer Weston McKennie, it did not help Leeds United get results.
The influx of Americans has led critics to question whether Americans were knowledgeable enough about the game to produce a successful coach in the Premier League. This criticism is quite harsh as there were many moments when Leeds United was playing wonderful soccer but could not find the back of the net. But at the end of the day, in a high-level league like the Premier League, results are drastically more important than the quality of soccer being played by a team.
So the question is, who will be the next American coach in the Premier League, and will they succeed?
