In last week’s preview, a handful of goalkeepers were highlighted. This week, we’re moving up the pitch to note a few defenders to watch. Heading towards kickoff, several defenders stand out from the rest.

Ona Batlle (Spain)

One of Spain's stars of the Euros, Batlle led Spain in tackles (19), tackles won (12) and blocks (nine). She kept up her performances this WSL season, making about two tackles, two blocks and two interceptions per game. On the offensive side, she provided nine assists. A great all-around player, Batlle can be a key figure for Spain in this Women’s World Cup.

Lucy Bronze (England)

Arguably England’s biggest star heading into the Women’s World Cup, Lucy Bronze will go into this tournament having a point to prove after England’s heartbreak in the previous Women’s World Cup. This past season in Liga F, Bronze made about three tackles, one block and two interceptions per game. Will she add a Women’s World Cup title to her trophy cabinet?

Alana Cook (United States)

Although Cook has never played in a Women’s World Cup, all eyes will be on her as she looks to fill the void of the injured Becky Sauerbrunn. So far this NWSL season, Cook leads the league in interceptions with 31, but she will need to improve her overall defensive game if the United States’ women are to win their third straight Women’s World Cup.

Ali Riley (New Zealand)

Angel City FC may be sitting in ninth place, but discount Ali Riley’s performances at your own risk. This season in the NWSL, Riley has made about 3 tackles, 2 blocks and 1 interception per game. She will provide a valuable asset to co-host New Zealand: experience. This Women’s World Cup will be Riley's fifth, as she and New Zealand look to banish their group-stage demons and make a deep run in the tournament.

Wendie Renard (France)

There were some doubts as to whether Renard would play a part in this year’s Women’s World Cup after she previously stepped back from the France national team. However, she has decided to come back, and as an ever-commanding presence in France's defense, Renard will be looking to finally add a Women’s World Cup to her trophy cabinet. Coming off a season in which she scored 7 goals, watch out for Renard to come up big for France again.
