Cristiano Ronaldo reaches 900 Goals! Portugal’s Main Man comes to the rescue in the Nations League
Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 900th career goal against Croatia, becoming the first ever player to score 900 goals. Ronaldo’s two goals in two Nations League games puts Portugal first place in Group A.
After a disappointing Euro 2024 which saw Portugal crash out in the quarterfinals, many wondered what would happen to Cristiano Ronaldo’s international career. Now there’s no question: Portugal’s all-time leading goal scorer is back at it again, with the striker scoring last week against Croatia, helping the Portuguese win 2-1 at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon, Portugal. Ronaldo fell to his knees after scoring, finishing a beautiful cross from Nuno Mendes into the back of the net.
After Portugal’s triumph over Croatia, Ronaldo reacted to his achievement by stating “I don’t follow records, the records follow me”. The Al-Nassr forward has rebounded from Portugal’s failure at Euro 2024 with 6 goals and 2 assists in all competitions this season. That’s not all though, as Ronaldo is seeking to get 1000 goals, something that would add to an already incredible legacy.
Three days later, Portugal took on Scotland in Matchday two of the Nations League. Down 1-0 to the Scots at the half, Portugal’s Manager Roberto Martinez looked to his captain who started the game on the bench. Ronaldo came on at halftime, giving the Portuguese a boost which they so desperately needed. Bruno Fernandes hit a low curling shot into the corner of the net, bringing Portugal back into the game at 1-1. Portugal came close several times to breaking the deadlock but nothing would go their way. Until later the game, in the 88th minute, Nuno Mendes put a cross into the box and there was Cristiano Ronaldo to poach the ball. The Portuguese striker tapped it in for the winner and his 901st goal. With the international break done for now, Portugal leads Group A with six points, hoping to add another trophy to their captain’s extensive trophy cabinet.
