Champions League Recap: City, PSG, and Liverpool win, Bayern tie in the last minute
The first leg of the round of 16 of this year’s UEFA Champions League brought us some interesting games between the biggest clubs in Europe.
The first set of games on Tuesday was Manchester City vs Sporting CP and PSG vs Real Madrid. Man City eased passed Sporting winning the game 5-0, Riyad Mahrez 7’, Bernardo Silva 17’ 44’, Phil Foden 32’ and Raheem Sterling 58’ scored for the citizens. The other game of the day didn’t have as many goals, but it was a game full of exciting soccer. Messi and Mbappe started the game while Neymar came in from the bench in the 75th minute. The game was mostly controlled by PSG, and Madrid didn’t have a shot on target all night. Messi had the chance to put his team in front but he missed a penalty kick in the 62nd minute. Even though PSG had many chances, it wasn’t until the 90th minute when after an amazing play by Mbappe, he left 2 defenders behind and scored in between the legs of Madrid’s keeper Tibaut Courtois.
Wednesday’s games didn’t disappoint either. The least attractive game of the day, FC Salzburg vs Bayern Munich ended up being a really interesting match up as Salzburg was on the lead for most of the game, after Chukwubuike Adamu scored in the 21st minute. The mighty Bayern wasn’t able to score until the 90th minute when french striker Kingsley Coman scored a really important goal for his side. After this shocking draw it was the turn of Inter vs Liverpool to close this first round of games. Both teams displayed great soccer but Liverpool came out on top, Roberto Firmino 75’ and Mohamed Salah 83’ scored for the Reds.
The second leg for these games will be on March 8th (Liverpool vs Inter; Bayern Munich vs FC Salzburg) and March 9th (Real Madrid vs PSG; Manchester City vs Sporting CP).
