Australian Pro Footballer Publicly Comes Out as Gay
Josh Cavallo, an Australian professional soccer player for Adelaide United, publicly came out as gay earlier today. He posted on his Instagram, telling his followers he had something personal to share with them.
"Growing up I always felt the need to hide myself, you know, because I was ashamed. Ashamed I would never be able to do what I love and be gay. Hiding who I truly am to pursue a dream I always wished for as a kid. All I want to do is play football and be treated equally. I'm tired of trying to perform at the best of [my] ability and to live this double life. It's exhausting, it's something that I don't want anyone to experience."
He is currently one of the very few top-flight players to be publicly out, the general fear is that if players came out they would not be respected and could possibly lose their spots that they worked so hard for. Cavallo had said because of that he had not wanted to come out, however he has since said, "not the case," and he's "earned more respect." Cavallo has also said that because no other players around the world are out, and βhopes that will change in the near futureβ. And those players will feel safe enough to do so whenever they are ready.
Cavallo started his A-League career with Western United in the 2019-2020 season. He began his time with Adelaide United in early 2021. He is 21 years old.
Adelaide United soon after issued a statement of support for Cavallo.
"We stand alongside Josh for proudly being true to himself and will continue to love and support him as a member of our beautifully diverse family," said Adelaide United.
Cavallo joins players such as NHL hockey player Luke Prokop and NFL Defensive End Carl Nassib as some of the first people in their respective sports to come out as gay while still activly playing their sport. Cavallo hopes his story will encourage others to feel confident in themselves and that they can do it too, knowing βits ok to be gay and to play football.β
